Powering India’s Industrial Future: The Vision Behind Boiler India Expo

In this insightful conversation, Bhanu Rajagopalan, Managing Director, Orangebeak Technologies Pvt. Ltd., shares his vision for the Boiler India Expo and its significance for India’s growing industrial ecosystem. The discussion explores the evolution of the boiler and thermal engineering sector, emerging opportunities, technological advancements, and the role of the expo in bringing industry stakeholders together.

This industry moves fast right now, hydrogen-ready boilers, smart emission-compliant systems, retrofit demand driven by tightening norms, and the deals, the partnerships, the vendor relationships that matter get built in these three days, not over email six months later.

TFT: What can exhibitors and visitors expect from the upcoming edition of Boiler India Expo? Are there any new features or special initiatives being introduced this year?

Bhanu Rajagopalan: We expect a bigger, denser show. We’re targeting 250+ exhibitors from 30+ countries and 20,000+ qualified trade visitors this time, with 12+ seminars running across the three days. That’s on top of what we already delivered in 2024. We don’t want to just repeat that number, we want to build on it.

We’ve also polished the seminar tracks, Clean Energy & Decarbonization, Digital Steam Systems, Circular Economy & Waste Heat Recovery, Boiler Skills & Certification.

TFT: With industries increasingly focusing on energy efficiency and decarbonisation, how is the boiler and thermal engineering sector adapting to these changing market demands?

Bhanu Rajagopalan: Our panel discussion was titled “Shaping the Boiler Industry to Mitigate Future Energy Requirements and Climate Risks,” and that room was packed. We had panellists on stage talking net-zero pathways for an industry that’s traditionally been seen as, you know, smokestacks and steam.

We’re seeing real product upgrade on the exhibitor front, low-NOx systems, electric-gas hybrids, hydrogen-ready boilers, DeNOx SCR/SNCR tech, online continuous emission monitoring systems.

Sustainability officers and ESG consultants attend a defined visitor category now.

TFT: Boiler India has expanded internationally with editions in Nairobi and Bangkok. What has been the response from global markets, and are there plans to expand into new regions?

Bhanu Rajagopalan: Exhibitors who did Boiler World Nairobi turned around and participated in the Indian edition too. Several of our India exhibitors participated with us in Bangkok because they wanted a foothold in Southeast Asia.

India, East Africa, Southeast Asia aren’t separate markets to us, they’re one connected demand corridor. India’s fabrication base is perfectly positioned to serve, all of the thermal-heat-industry. So yes, more regional expansion is coming. We’re planning a construction chemicals and equipment expo ICON Asia, so that’s next.

TFT: What are the biggest challenges currently facing the boiler manufacturing and thermal engineering industry and how Boiler India Expo will address them?

Bhanu Rajagopalan: One- skills. There’s a real gap in trained boiler operators and technicians, which is why “Boiler Skills & Certification” is discussed at depth during Boiler India.  Two – compliance and emissions norms tightening globally, faster than a lot of mid-size manufacturers can retool for.

Three – fuel transition. Moving from conventional fired boilers to biomass, hydrogen-ready, or electric systems isn’t cheap, and a lot of MSMEs are stuck figuring out the economics of it.

What we can actually do about that from an event standpoint is put the right people in the same room, plant heads standing next to the OEM that just built a retrofit kit, an EPC consultant next to a government inspection body.

TFT: Have you observed a shift in visitor profiles over the years? Are more decision-makers and plant heads attending the exhibition today?

Bhanu Rajagopalan: Yes, definitely. Plant heads and maintenance engineers were always core to this show, but what’s changed is the width of the room.

We’re now regularly getting procurement heads, ESG consultants, investors and startups in energy tech, even government inspection authorities walking the floor.

And there’s a growing academic presence too, which tells us this is becoming a talent pipeline event as much as a trade event. The international mix has also gotten heavier. Exhibitors aren’t just pitching to the domestic market anymore.

TFT: Looking back, what has been the proudest milestone in the journey of Boiler India Expo?

Bhanu Rajagopalan: Watching it go from a domestic industrial expo to something with 37 countries represented, that told us this had genuinely become the platform for the industry.

And now we’ve taken the Best Boiler User Awards national. Which means a plant’s performance nowk gets looked at and recognized by the Centre and DPIIT as well. For plant heads and industries that take safety and efficiency seriously, that changes what winning actually means.

TFT: If you could introduce one major change to India’s exhibition industry, what would it be and why?

Bhanu Rajagopalan: If I could change one thing, it’d be standardized, government-backed venue and logistics infrastructure across more Tier-2 cities. The moment you try to scale a niche industrial show like ours, you hit inconsistent venue quality, customs friction for international exhibitors bringing in equipment.

Also, we’d genuinely like to see better subsidy systems and stronger economic backing from the government for MSEs. They’re the backbone of this industry, and easing their cost of participation would only deepen the ecosystem we’re trying to build.

TFT: Finally, what message would you like to share with the ones looking to attend the expo?

Bhanu Rajagopalan: This industry moves fast right now, hydrogen-ready boilers, smart emission-compliant systems, retrofit demand driven by tightening norms, and the deals, the partnerships, the vendor relationships that matter get built in these three days, not over email six months later.
