Bhubaneswar to Develop Mega Convention Centre, Boosting the Global Destination Tourism

In a significant stride towards establishing itself as a premier global destination for business and tourism, the capital city of Odisha is poised to develop its largest convention centre to date. With an impressive seating capacity of 10,000 attendees, this ambitious project is a key component of the Odisha government’s strategic vision.

The responsibility for implementing this landmark project in Chandrasekharpur has been entrusted to the Odisha Bridge Construction Corporation (OBCC), which will oversee its development under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The state-of-the-art centre is envisioned to host a wide array of international conferences, large-scale exhibitions, and diverse cultural programs, further elevating Bhubaneswar’s global profile.

RFP Issued for Transaction Advisor:

In a crucial initial step, authorities have issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to appoint a transaction advisor. This advisor will be responsible for the critical tasks of preparing the detailed project report and diligently overseeing the entire execution phase of this high-impact infrastructure venture.

Strategic Location Near Rail Sadan:

The sprawling mega facility will be strategically located on an expansive 18-acre site in close proximity to Rail Sadan, the headquarters of the East Coast Railway. This prime location offers excellent connectivity via the key Jaydev Vihar–Nandankanan Road. The land currently occupied by the OMFED plant will be thoughtfully cleared to accommodate the development of this significant new centre.

Key Features of the World-Class Convention Centre:

Plans for the ambitious facility include a comprehensive range of features designed to meet international standards:

  • A grand plenary hall with a seating capacity of 4,000.
  • A substantial 1,200-seat meeting hall and a secondary hall accommodating 500 attendees.
  • Four well-equipped conference rooms, each with a capacity of 100 seats.
  • An expansive indoor exhibition space spanning 50,000 sq ft.
  • A significant outdoor exhibition zone capable of accommodating up to 30,000 visitors.

In addition to these core features, the convention centre will boast climate-controlled interiors for optimal comfort, ample parking facilities to accommodate a large number of attendees, advanced security systems to ensure safety and security, and beautifully landscaped public zones, creating an inviting and functional environment.

PPP Model for Quality and Efficiency:

The entire project will be strategically funded by private sector players, with the OBCC spearheading the execution and ensuring its successful completion. This PPP approach is expected to guarantee the development of state-of-the-art infrastructure, streamlined and efficient operations, and adherence to world-class design standards.

This significant initiative builds upon Bhubaneswar’s growing reputation as a preferred venue for hosting major national and international events, including prestigious G20 meetings and the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. The development of this mega convention centre marks a key and decisive step towards firmly establishing the city as a premier convention destination in Eastern India, attracting significant economic and tourism benefits to the region.
