Oman Eyes Indian Tourists with Premium MICE & Wedding Destinations

In a strategic push to attract more visitors from India, Oman is actively promoting itself as a premier destination for corporate events and celebrations, including destination weddings, a senior official from Oman Tourism has confirmed.

MICE: A Key Growth Area:

Oman is focusing on the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, with several Indian clients already considering the country as a preferred venue, said Arjun Chadha, Country Manager for Oman Tourism in India, in an interview with PTI.

“Our goal is to increase participation in this segment and build a loyal clientele that frequently hosts MICE events in Oman,” Chadha stated.

In 2023, Oman welcomed six lakh Indian visitors, a testament to its growing appeal. The Oman embassy’s “A Journey to Explore Oman” campaign, launched in September 2023, aims to raise Indian tourist numbers to seven lakh.

Beyond the Deserts: Oman’s Diverse Offerings:

Unlike the common perception of Oman as just a desert landscape, the country offers a diverse range of experiences across three distinct regions:

  • Muscat – The vibrant capital, known for its rich heritage and modern attractions.
  • Salalah – Renowned for its lush greenery, waterfalls, and unique monsoon season.
  • Jabal Akhdar – A breathtaking mountainous region, ideal for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

In August 2024, Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism identified India as a key source market outside the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The country is leveraging geographical proximity, streamlined visa processes, and aggressive promotional efforts including roadshows in Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata to strengthen its presence in the Indian tourism market.

Destination Weddings & Luxury Hospitality:

While corporates continue to book MICE events, Oman is also witnessing a surge in destination weddings.

“The Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Muscat, is a top choice for Indian couples due to its historical significance and royal heritage,” Chadha noted.

In recent years, an increasing number of Indian weddings have been hosted at the palace, and this trend is expected to rise further. Additionally, Oman offers a range of beachfront venues and resorts with ample space, making it an ideal location for grand celebrations.

The large Indian community in Oman further strengthens the hospitality sector, ensuring personalized services and familiar cultural elements for Indian visitors.

Salalah & Muscat: Expanding Event Opportunities:

Beyond weddings, Salalah serves as an excellent venue for corporate gatherings, product launches, and wedding celebrations.

“Muscat’s proximity to Dubai just four hours by road also makes it a convenient destination for travellers who wish to explore both places,” Chadha added.

With Oman Tourism prioritizing travel from India, the sultanate is set to become a top choice for MICE events, luxury weddings, and unique travel experiences in the years ahead.
