What’s Next for India’s Furniture Industry? | Favas P., Director, HIFF
In this conversation, we speak with Mr. Favas P, Director – Hindustan International Furniture Fair (HIFF), about the evolving landscape of India’s furniture industry and the growing need for greater organisation, collaboration and innovation within the sector. He shares his perspective on furniture manufacturing, design trends, technology, international opportunities and the future of India’s furniture market, along with the vision behind HIFF as a platform connecting manufacturers, buyers, designers and industry professionals.
TFT: HIFF was conceived with the vision of bringing the Indian furniture industry together under one roof. What was the industry gap that led to the creation of HIFF?
Favas: When we started HIFF in 2016, we saw a very big industry but without enough connection between manufacturers, retailers and buyers. Our idea was simple: bring the real furniture industry under one roof and create business, not just an exhibition.
TFT: India’s furniture industry remains highly fragmented, with a large share of the market comprising independent manufacturers, carpenters and retailers. How is this structure evolving?
Favas: This fragmentation is also one of India’s strengths. We have thousands of capable manufacturers and skilled people across the country. Now they are becoming more organised, investing in branding, technology, design and better production, and thinking beyond their local markets.
TFT: With more than 650 exhibitors participating over the last two years, what does this participation tell you about the growth and changing aspirations of India’s furniture industry?
Favas: It tells us one thing very clearly: the industry wants to grow. Manufacturers today want new markets, stronger dealer networks, better visibility and international opportunities. The ambition is much bigger than it was a few years ago.
TFT: What are the biggest challenges preventing India’s furniture industry from becoming more organised and globally competitive?
Favas: India has the talent, manufacturing capability and market. What we need now is better standardisation, technology, skilled manpower, organised supply chains and stronger industry collaboration. If we improve these areas, India has enormous global potential.
TFT: How important is standardisation and quality control for Indian furniture manufacturers looking to compete globally?
Favas: It is no longer optional. If we want the world to buy Indian furniture, we must deliver consistent quality, safety and reliability. Good design may open the door, but quality is what builds long-term business.
TFT: Are you seeing greater interest from international buyers and brands looking to source from Indian manufacturers?
Favas: Definitely. International buyers are looking at India much more seriously today. We have craftsmanship, materials, manufacturing capability and design talent. The opportunity now is to convert that interest into long-term sourcing relationships.
TFT: Finally, what makes HIFF different from other furniture exhibitions, and why should furniture professionals, designers and buyers visit the show?
Favas: HIFF is not just about filling exhibition halls with stalls. We want to fill those halls with business opportunities. We bring manufacturers, retailers, distributors, designers, architects and buyers together with one purpose — to connect, discover products and create business. That has been the DNA of HIFF from day one.
