The Need for an Eco-friendly Exhibition Space!

By Jagriti Pandey, Project Head, Futurex Trade Fairs and Events Private Limited.

Have you ever walked out of an exhibition hall and thought to yourself, “𝑇ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑧𝑖𝑛𝑔… 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑡’𝑠 𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟?” The vibrant booths, the glowing lights, the piles of brochures — it all looks incredible in the moment, but behind the scenes, the industry has been asking the same question. For years, but today, the conversation has shifted. It’s not just about what we build, but ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑤𝑒 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑 𝑖𝑡 — and whether we can do it in a way that respects our planet.

The story of exhibitions goes back to 1851, when London hosted 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡 𝐸𝑥ℎ𝑖𝑏𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛, the first global celebration of human creativity and innovation. Back then, it was about showing the world what humanity could make. Fast forward to 2025, and that spirit is still alive — only now, the focus is on creating experiences that are smarter, greener, and more meaningful.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐧 — from extravagant to eco-conscious. Today, organizers are rethinking everything. Those single-use booths? They’re being replaced with 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫, 𝐫𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬. Printed flyers? Out. 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐐𝐑 𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐬 are in. Even coffee cups and display materials are being swapped for 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. These might sound like small steps, but collectively, they’re making a big impact — some events have cut waste in half, and modular setups are reducing emissions by over 60%. Slowly but surely, exhibitions are learning to leave behind memories, not mess.

𝐸𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑏𝑙𝑒 — quite literally. Exhibition halls that once burned through massive amounts of electricity are now switching to 𝐋𝐄𝐃 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐈-𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬, saving anywhere from 10% to 80% of their energy. Some venues, like 𝐘𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐢 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐡𝐢 are even running partly on 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫. And here’s what’s really encouraging: sustainability in exhibitions is no longer just a trend or a PR statement — it’s becoming a culture. Thanks to standards like 𝐈𝐒𝐎 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟐𝟏:𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 and the 𝐍𝐞𝐭 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 initiative, organizers are being held accountable for what they claim.

Over 𝟒𝟎𝟎 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞 have already committed to tracking and publishing their event emissions, making the shift from talk to transparent action.

𝑆𝑜, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑥𝑡 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑑 𝑎 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑒 𝑓𝑎𝑖𝑟 𝑜𝑟 𝑒𝑥ℎ𝑖𝑏𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛, 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝑎𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑 — they all tell a story. A story of an industry that’s learning to celebrate innovation without costing the Earth. Because at the end of the day, exhibitions aren’t just about showcasing what we create — they’re about showing how responsibly we can create it!
